Omron Body Composition Monitor with Scale
- Price: $$
- Connects via: N/A
- Syncs with: N/A
- Power source: 4 AA batteries

If you’re aiming for a very specific body fat goal, accuracy is everything. Enter full body Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA), which is the process of sending a low level electrical current through your body (nope, you can’t feel it). Different parts of your bod (like fat, water, and bone) slow down the current in different ways. The scale uses that information to determine various measurements like body fat percentage and muscle mass.
Most smart scales rely on sending an electrical current through your feet only. But the Omron Body Composition Monitor also features an upper body scanner that sends electric signals through your hands to get an ultra-accurate reading.
This smart scale measures:
- weight
- BMI
- body fat percentage
- skeletal muscle
- resting metabolism
- visceral fat
- body age
Reviewers applaud the accuracy of the scale but complain the design is outdated and wish there was an app.

How to choose the best smart scale for you
Smart scales tend to cost more than your average scale, so you want to make sure your choice is just as smart as your scale. Here are some tips for picking the best one for you.
- Know your numbers. Make a list of the metrics that are important to you and pick a scale that tracks them all.
- Sync up. If you’re committed to tracking progress in an app like Fitbit or MyFitnessPal, be sure to choose a scale that can share data with that app.
- Check your connection. Check the signal strength in your bathroom — or wherever you plan to house your scale — before opting for a scale that connects via Wi-Fi.
- Sharing is caring. Are there other people in your household that could benefit from a smart scale? If so, choose a scale that can accommodate multiple user profiles.
Sooo, how do smart scales even work?
Here’s the skinny on how these scales outsmart the basic scale. Smart scales use something called bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). It sounds super science-y and that’s because it is.
When you step onto the scale, a little electrical pulse is sent through your bare feet and travels up through your body. (Don’t worry, you can’t feel it). Along the way, the impulse measures how much resistance it must go through.
Why does resistance matter? Well, it’s harder for electrical current to travel through fat than muscle and going through water is easy peasy. The scale takes the resistance measurements and plugs them into a fancy formula that considers your age, height, and sex and voila! You learn a lot more than just what your body weighs.
Smart scales give measurements related to your body composition, including:
- body weight
- body mass index
- body fat percentage
- muscle mass
- bone mass
- water
But… are they accurate?
Short answer: unlikely. A 2021 study tested three smart scales against a DEXA scan and found they didn’t exactly calculate body composition accurately. And Consumer Reports tested six scales against a Bod Pod and again the smart scales didn’t measure up.
But that doesn’t mean a smart scale can’t still help you reach your goals. Using one consistently will show you if you’re trending in the right direction. So instead of focusing on any specific number, pay attention to whether that number is increasing or decreasing over time.
Pros and cons of smart scales
The pros of smart scales
- Data-tastic. The information you get from smart scales totally outweighs what you’ll learn from a normal scale.
- Back on track. Most scales come with apps that let you easily track your progress. Plus, they often sync with popular apps like Apple HealthKit and MyFitnessPal.
The cons of smart scales
- Missing the mark. The accuracy of bioelectrical impedance analysis is dubious.
- Searching for signal. Smart scales rely on Bluetooth or Wi-Fi to sync with apps. Set up issues and spotty connection often equals frustrated customers.
Other smart fitness accessories to consider
Smart scales aren’t your only option for measuring metrics to better understand your health. Here are some more tools to add to your techy toolbox.
- Omron also makes a handheld fat loss monitor which is much more portable than a smart scale.
- Lumen is a metabolic measurement device that analyzes your breath to let you know if you’re burning carbs or fat.
- The Skulpt Scanner gives you localized body fat percentage and muscle analysis based on where you place it on your body.
- The Bello Belly Fat Scanner analyzes and tracks visceral and subcutaneous belly fat.
The bottom line
Smart scales can give you weigh more information than a regular scale. And metrics like body fat percentage and lean muscle mass are usually better indicators of your overall health and fitness than body weight alone.
The accuracy of the technology used may still be in question but it’s not all about the numbers. If you focus on the trends instead of the digits, a smart scale can be a great tool to help you step up your health game.
