Are Tempur-Pedic Mattresses Worth the Splurge?

Tempur-Pedic is the OG of memory foam mattresses. They can’t take credit for creating the foam itself — it was initially developed by NASA — but Tempur-Pedic was the first to tell us to sleep on it. And for that, we might as well call them rocket scientists. 🚀

But what do the Tempur-Pedic mattresses look like today? We jumped into bed with the memory foam masters to size up their current line of mattresses. Here’s everything you need to know to decide which Tempur-Pedic is right for you.

Pros and cons of Tempur-Pedic mattresses

On a need-to-know basis? Here are the highlights of our bed time with the Tempur-Pedic line.

Pros

  • All the choices. Tempur-Pedic offers all-foam and hybrid mattresses — and you can even choose which construction you want for several models. Some models also come with multiple firmness options: soft, medium, or firm.
  • Split up. Almost all the Tempur-Pedic mattresses are available in a split king or split California king, so you can have a mattress all to yourself without kicking your sleeping partner out of bed.
  • What a (pressure) relief. All the mattresses are made with a proprietary foam the company says is designed specifically to respond to your unique body weight, shape, and temperature. No pressure points here!
  • The still of the night. Foam mattresses help reduce motion transfer, so your partner can roll around while you stay put.
  • Easy-peasy. A Tempur-Pedic mattress comes with free white glove delivery. So fancy!
  • Laundry day approved. Enjoy your Zzz’s germ-free. Several mattresses come with a zip-off cover that can be thrown in the wash.
  • Socially responsible. Tempur-Pedic has donated more than $100 million in mattresses to military personnel, first responders, and disaster relief efforts. The company also sourced 100 percent renewable energy for its U.S. and European manufacturing locations in 2020 and is aiming for zero landfill waste by the end of 2022 and carbon neutrality for all operations by 2040.

Cons

  • Bucks for the luxe. Tempur-Pedic mattresses are more expensive than foam mattresses from other brands, but financing options are available.
  • Time’s up. Most mattress companies offer a 100-night sleep trial, but Tempur-Pedic wants you to make up your mind in 90 nights.

Pricing guide

Compared with those of other brands, Tempur-Pedic’s prices are a little steep, ranging from just under $2,000 to $4,999 for queen-size mattresses.

  • $ = under $2,000
  • $$ = $2,001–$3,500
  • $$$ = over $3,500

TEMPUR-Cloud

Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Cloud mattress
  • Price: $
  • Type: All-foam
  • Height: 10 inches (in.)
  • Firmness: Medium
  • Good for: People looking for Tempur-Pedic’s cheapest option

The TEMPUR-Cloud is Tempur-Pedic’s basic — yet still a little treat yo’ self — model. It has fewer customization options than its counterparts and is designed to be equal parts soft and supportive.

Construction: According to the company, one foam layer is designed to be soft and responsive, while the layer beneath is designed to conform to your body and relieve any pressure points while you sleep. Add a moisture-wicking cover meant to provide better breathability and airflow and VOILA! You’re sleeping on a cloud.

What reviewers say: Most reviewers agree this mattress strikes the perfect balance between supportive and soft and really is like sleeping on a cloud. However, some reviewers aren’t feeling it and claim it’s more like sleeping on a rock.

TEMPUR-Adapt

Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Adapt mattress
  • Price: $$
  • Type: Hybrid or all-foam
  • Height: 11 in.
  • Firmness: Medium
  • Good for: Combination sleepers

Imagine sleeping on a cloud but now it’s a lovely fall night. That’s the TEMPUR-Adapt. It’s available in all-foam and hybrid versions, both with medium firmness.

Construction: Like the TEMPUR-Cloud, it has a foam layer for comfort and another for support. But this mattress ups its game with a cover designed to be cool to the touch, so you never feel like you’re getting too close to the sun. The cover also has antimicrobial elements that protect the mattress from the usual allergen suspects like dust mites and mold.

What reviewers say: Reviewers say they wake up feeling rested and refreshed with fewer aches and pains. But some people complain of feeling stuck and not being able to get comfortable.

TEMPUR-ProAdapt

Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-ProAdapt mattress
  • Price: $$
  • Type: Hybrid or all-foam
  • Height: 12 in.
  • Firmness: Soft, medium, firm (foam); medium (hybrid)
  • Good for: People with back pain

Under pressure? The TEMPUR-ProAdapt is made with a foam specifically designed to relieve pressure.

Construction: You can choose between a hybrid and an all-foam mattress — the hybrid version comes in medium firmness, and the all-foam version comes in soft, medium, or firm. The firmness of each mattress is determined by the material used in the comfort and support layers. And the cover is cooling, antimicrobial, and washable. Hello, freshness!

What reviewers say: Reviewers praise the pressure relief, saying it has helped with shoulder, hip, and back pain. But others say the mattress gives a little too much support and is firmer than they wanted it to be.

TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt

Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt mattress
  • Price: $$$
  • Type: All-foam
  • Height: 13 in.
  • Firmness: Soft, firm
  • Good for: Back and side sleepers

Need a hug? The TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt combines the pressure relief of the TEMPUR-ProAdapt with an ultra-conforming foam layer designed to cradle your body as you sleep.

Construction: This mattress isn’t available as a hybrid, but you do get to choose between soft and firm. Side sleepers will probably find the soft more comfy, and back sleepers are more likely to dig the firm. Plus, the cooling, antimicrobial cover zips off for easy washing.

What reviewers say: Some reviewers say the TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt is worth the investment. Others claim the mattress sleeps hotter than advertised.

TEMPUR-breeze

Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-breeze mattress
  • Price: $$$
  • Type: Hybrid or all-foam
  • Height: 12 in. (PRObreeze) or 13 in. (LUXEbreeze)
  • Firmness: Soft, medium, firm (foam); medium (hybrid)
  • Good for: People who sleep hot

This choice won’t be easy-breezy. The TEMPUR-breeze comes in two models: PRObreeze and LUXEbreeze. Both are designed to sleep cool, but they have some differences.

Construction: Here’s what the PRObreeze and LUXEbreeze have in common:

  • Both feature phase-change material that the company says absorbs heat and increases airflow.
  • Both are available in all-foam versions.
  • Both have a cooling, antimicrobial, removable cover.

And here’s how they differ:

  • Tempur-Pedic says the PRObreeze is 3 degrees cooler than other mattresses, while the LUXEbreeze is 8 degrees cooler.
  • The PRObreeze is available in all-foam and hybrid versions (both with medium firmness), while the LUXEbreeze is available only as all-foam (with soft and firm options).
  • The support layer of the PRObreeze is made using the original TEMPUR material, while the support layer of the LUXEbreeze uses ventilated material designed for maximum airflow.

What reviewers say: Reviewers say the mattress does sleep cool, so the name is fitting. In fact, some reviewers claim it’s a little too cold for their liking.

How to choose a Tempur-Pedic mattress

Here’s the good news: You can rest assured you’re getting a quality mattress when you buy from Tempur-Pedic. But how do you know which one to hop into bed with? Here are some key considerations when choosing your Tempur-Pedic mattress.

Mattress type

While hybrid mattresses have coil springs in the base, they’re still covered by layers of foam. So, what’s really the difference between an all-foam and a hybrid mattress?

  • Edge support. All-foam mattresses can sometimes feel flimsy, whereas hybrid mattresses have firmer edges, so you won’t feel like you’re about to fall off.
  • Transfer of motion. Typically, all-foam mattresses provide better motion isolation than their hybrid counterparts. But Tempur-Pedic offers split king and split California king hybrid mattresses, so you can keep some bounce in your bed without feeling your partner’s every move.
  • Sinkage. Although they’re covered in foam, the springs in the base of hybrid models tend to provide more support than foam bases, decreasing the extent to which you can sink into the mattress and increasing the mattress’s long-term durability.

Mattress feel

Tempur-Pedic lets you choose your firmness level, which is great — unless you don’t know what you like. Consider the following to help you find a firmness that’s right for you:

  • Body weight. A firm bed will feel softer to someone with a higher body weight and firmer to someone with a lower body weight. This is especially important for couples to consider when mattress shopping.
  • Sleep position. Stomach and side sleepers may prefer a softer feel, while people who roll around may want a firmer mattress so they never feel stuck.
  • Back pain. A 2015 research review concluded that medium-firm mattresses are ideal for people with back pain. None of Tempur-Pedic’s mattresses are technically medium-firm — but a firm mattress might feel medium-firm for people with higher body weight, and a medium mattress might feel medium-firm for people with lower body weight.

Body temperature

Foam mattresses get a bad rap for holding heat. But many companies (including Tempur-Pedic) have developed innovative cooling features so hot sleepers can get in on the foam mattress action.

If you’re going to buy a Tempur-Pedic, opt for one of the TEMPURbreeze models with the phase-changing material. If you go with another brand, do your research and read reviews before buying to see if other customers found the mattress cooling.

Tempur-Pedic company policies

Tempur-Pedic’s website displays customer-friendly company policies like a 90-night sleep trial, a 10-year warranty, and free white glove delivery for mattress purchases. Sounds great, right? But as many customers have learned the hard way, the devil is in the details.

90-night trial

Tempur-Pedic says that if you aren’t satisfied with your mattress before the trial is up, they’ll take the mattress back and refund your money minus shipping charges. But here’s the truth revealed by customer complaints:

  • Those shipping charges could be up to $175.
  • The company encourages you to purchase a base from them to ensure your mattress stays under warranty, but the base is not included in the trial. So, if you don’t like the mattress, you’re still stuck with the base.
  • Multiple customers complain that when they did return their mattresses within the trial, Tempur-Pedic was asleep at the wheel when it came to returning their money.

10-year warranty

It’s not as simple as it sounds. The company has numerous complaints of warranty claims being denied because the customers’ issues didn’t meet the requirements.

Several customers write that their mattress started to sag in the middle after a couple years, but their warranty claim was denied because it didn’t sag enough. You must be able to prove that your mattress sag meets the sag threshold for the warranty to hold.

Customers also say that even when warranty claims were approved, it took a long time for them to receive their replacement, even after their defective mattress had been picked up.

So, if you’re going to submit a warranty claim, read the fine print and call dibs on the couch.

The bottom line

The Tempur-Pedic line of mattresses is a testament to the brand’s years of experience in the foam mattress business. The variety of options and material combinations is out of this world.

Our verdict: This brand is an oldie but a goodie — and it’s definitely a splurge worthy of some extra research before hitting “add to cart.”
